On May 11, 2018, a jury in Prince George’s County, Md., awarded Ronald L. White
nearly $300,000 in a medical malpractice case. White claimed that John P. Byrne, an
orthopedist who was performing hip replacement surgery on him, accidentally
misaligned White’s femoral stem so that it perforated out of the back of the femur (thigh
bone). Then, after the surgeon failed to realize that he had made a mistake and correct
it in time, White suffered a stroke.
White was then required to have a second hip replacement surgery at another hospital
18 days after the initial surgery. After the second surgery, White made a full recovery
without permanent injury. The jury awarded him $200,000 for 18 days of pain and
suffering and $94,000 in medical expenses for the second surgery.
