Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, and the Courage to Speak Up

Headshot Virginia Grimm

The new documentary You Can See Everything puts Elizabeth Holmes back in the spotlight, but JGL attorney Virginia (Gia) Grimm wants readers to remember the people who helped expose the truth. In a new article for the TAF Coalition, Gia looks at how former Theranos employee Tyler Shultz and other whistleblowers helped uncover the company’s fraud.

Holmes told investors that Theranos had developed technology that could run a wide range of blood tests from a finger prick. Shultz worked in the company’s lab and saw that the technology couldn’t deliver what Holmes promised. Shultz worked with reporters and government attorneys to expose Theranos’s claims. In 2022, Holmes received a sentence of more than 11 years in federal prison for defrauding investors.

Gia’s article brings the focus back to the people who spoke up and the personal costs they faced. Their actions helped expose the fraud and bring Holmes to justice.
