Physicians are increasingly using AI as electronic scribes, dictating every examination and symptom as they diagnose. But physical exams rely on senses AI cannot replicate, and this gap can lead to hallucinations and missed symptoms, especially as physicians grow more reliant on the tools. Liability, Valerie notes, is unlikely to rest with any single party. Physicians, health systems, and AI developers may all share responsibility depending on how a tool was built, validated, and used, and because AI is not yet part of the standard of care, physicians face a difficult balance between relying on an opaque tool and overriding it.
“Proceed with caution. Extreme caution. Review every output every time. Use your training, your experience, and your judgment, and do not become overly reliant. That’s where the errors occur,” Valerie said.
