About the Role
Joseph, Greenwald & Laake (JGL) is a mid-sized, Plaintiff law firm providing sophisticated legal services. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a Finance Director to oversee the firm’s financial operations and serve as a strategic partner to firm leadership. This role will work closely with the Executive Committee to ensure financial stability, transparency, and long-term success.
The Finance Director will have responsibility for all aspects of the firm’s financial management, including:
- Lead financial planning and analysis (FP&A), including annual budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management for a mid-sized law firm
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to shareholders and firm leadership
- Oversee firm-wide budgeting, practice group profitability analysis, and shareholder compensation support
- Manage billing, collections, and revenue reporting using Litify case management software
- Ensure accurate tracking of matter-level financial performance, realization rates, utilization, and profitability
- Oversee trust accounting, payroll, taxes, audits, and regulatory compliance
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable state bar and trust accounting rules
- Manage and develop the finance and accounting team
- Collaborate with firm leadership to establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Support data integrity and reporting by working closely with administrative teams using iManage document management
- Improve financial processes, controls, and reporting systems as the firm grows
- Meet deadlines in a fast-paced, client-driven professional services environment

Required Skills and Competencies:
- Strong experience in financial planning, budgeting, and analysis within a professional services environment
- Advanced spreadsheet and financial modeling skills
- Working knowledge of law firm billing, collections, and trust accounting practices
- Experience working with or alongside Litify or similar legal case management systems preferred
- Experience working with Accounting Seed software preferred
- Ability to collaborate with administrative and legal teams leveraging iManage or other document management systems
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to clearly communicate financial information to partners and non-financial stakeholders
- Proven leadership experience managing finance or accounting staff
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field (required)
- CPA designation strongly preferred
- MBA or Master’s in Finance (a plus)
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive finance or accounting experience
- Prior experience in a law firm or mid-sized professional services firm strongly preferred
