What is Sexual Assault and Abuse?
Sexual assault abuse is any unwanted sexual act, up to and including rape.
Some examples of sexual assault and abuse include:
- Unwanted kissing.
- Forced touching of the victim, or the perpetrator forcing the victim to touch them.
- Forced penetration.
Sexual assault and abuse may also include forcing an individual to look at sexually inappropriate material, certain invasions of privacy, or sex trafficking. We also work with survivors of Title IX abuse and discrimination, tackling sexual misconduct, discrimination, and harassment within an educational setting.
Sexual Assault Statistics
Sexual assault and abuse can happen to people of all genders and ages. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center
- One in five women nationwide have experienced completed or attempted rape.
- 24.8% of men nationwide have experienced sexual violence.
According to RAINN, child protective services substantiates or finds evidence of child sexual abuse every 9 minutes.
Who may be liable for sexual assault and abuse?
In addition to the individual or individuals who committed an abusive act, other parties may be held liable in a case arising from sexual assault and abuse. In some cases, the attacker may be a co-worker and the place of employment may face liability for the survivor’s injuries. In other cases, such as those involving student-on-student assault and abuse, a school or college may face liability. Sometimes, a company, organization, or institution acted or failed to act in a way that allowed the abuse to take place, covered up the assault and abuse, or failed to take action to prevent the abuse. Under law, this may constitute negligence.
Our sexual assault and abuse litigation attorneys have successfully handled a number of cases on behalf of survivors against the institutions that caused, permitted, or failed to stop assault and abuse, including:
- Medical facilities;
- Nursing homes;
- Churches and religious organizations;
- Colleges and universities;
- Rideshare and taxi companies;
- Sports teams; and
- Hotels and motels.
