Title IX Abuse & Discrimination

Title IX Abuse & Discrimination

Backed by five decades of experience, JGL uses its extensive knowledge of the law to represent sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sexual discrimination victims.

Title IX applies to local and state educational agencies and other institutions that receive federal financial assistance, to protect individuals against sex-based discrimination.

When discrimination or abuse occurs, individuals have a private right of action to file a lawsuit or take other legal action.

Below, we break down Title IX and detail some instances of Title IX violations.

What is Title IX?

Title IX states the following:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

All public and private elementary and secondary schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving federal funds must comply with Title IX.

What Are Some Examples of Title IX Violations?

Title IX violations can include a wide range of discriminatory or abusive acts, including the following:

  • Sexually suggestive jokes, whistles, catcalls, or innuendos.

  • Inappropriate touching.

  • Acts of intimidation.

  • Gender-based bullying.

  • Derogatory or sexist remarks.

  • Gender discrimination in an activity, athletics, program, office, or classroom.

  • Sexual assault, battery, or coercion.

  • Attempted or completed rape.

  • Inappropriate touching.

  • Physical and aggressive sexual advances.
